Pros: Quite a nice place to go for an evening drink, this bar has plenty of seating, with booths, tables and even outdoor tables during the summer, on the end of Essex Road, this is within 5 minutes walk of Angel Tube Station and 10 minutes of Highbury and Islington tube, the place has a fantastic soundtrack with really well chosen music at all times, the music isn't overwhelming so you can have a good chat. Drinks are good, lots of draught lagers and a bitter or two, nice wine at not unreasonable prices and happy hour cocktails. Theres an interesting mix of media types, people finishing work and locals and generally a really good atmosphere, its spacious, staff are friendly and helpful. The food menu looked good, although I didn't eat as we were drinking before going onto dinner.
Overall its a cool bar, nice and chilled out with a great atmosphere, especially in the summer.
Pros: Back in my Islington days this was my favourite hang-out- thursdays for gossip and cocktails with the girls, friday for the music, saturdays for dinner, and sundays to chill out on their sofa drinking tasty milkshake cocktails!
The cocktail menu is brilliant with a great selection of classics as well as their own recipes- this is where my love for Amaretto sours came from- you should try one!
They aslo have lots of very yummy milkshake cocktails (the strawberry nut is my fave!)
Decor is gorgeous! All dark wood and leather sofas. Decor is important to me!
I recommend checking online to see when Andy Johnson or the Andy Johnson duo are playing- they are a great band who play a brilliant selection of songs that really create a lively atmosphere- everyone else seems to love them too!
Food here is not amazing but when combined with the great atmosphere and good service it makes for a really fab night out.
Sofas! Anywhere with sofas gets my vote to be honest, there's not much that beats a good catch up with friends on a sofa whilst drinking lots of cocktails.
This is in a fab location- lots of easy access from Highbury and islington or Angel stations. There's also lots of buses that go all over London. It's near lots of shops and restaurants so this is ideal place to come fro drinks after shopping and eating elsewhere. It's just 2 minutes walk from Upper street- if you're on a bar crawl you should definately stop off here! (make sure it's early on though as the doorman won't let you in if you're wasted!)
The atmosphere here is great and the doorman are good at ensuring only like-minded people are allowed in; this means there is a lot less trouble here than a lot of other local bars.
Dress code is smart/casual which weeds out the chavs and pikeys! (you know how much I hate those chavs and pikeys!) Don't turn up in a football shirt! they won't let you in (thankfully!)
Toilets are nice and clean, that's always a plus.
Cons: Um.... I tried to book a booth for my birthday a few years back and they were really unhelpful about it- apparently you have to book a few months in advance. I had to arrive early so I could reserve the area myself- even though there were no other bookings and it wasn't that busy.
Oh and on occasion the door staff can be a bit creepy, but doormen usually are.
