Fancy some borscht? A shot of schnapps to wash it down? Baltic's your place. A fantastic restaurant, it is separated into dining and bar snacks; or you cuold just sit and get slaughtered on their many delicious cocktails. The bar food has less emphasis on the eastern european food but is still lovely. Thedining area opens up architecturallya nd is really stunning, with a high arched ceiling nad modern feel. It does tend to get rammed in here so booking is always advisable; you're rightnear the cut with the Young and Old Vics so the pre and post theatre crowd tends to dominate. It's not a cheap night out in here, particularly if yuo get started on teh cocktails, but it is jolly good.
Pros: Located just off The Cut, opposite Southwark Tube station, the Baltic Bar and Restaurant is a really cool place to eat or drink. Its an Eastern European Bar, with Vodka stocked in every form, a bar designed exclusively out of Amber and Eastern European beers on the menu. Mainly the bar is a cocktail bar, providing above average priced cocktails to a stylish monied clientele, the bar food consists of Bilini's or other Eastern European foods. When eating in the restaurant, tables are stylishly laid, the service is excellent, the wine list is extensive and the menu offers a wide range of Polish, Russian, Ukrainian and other Eastern European dishes, I have eaten the Bigos there before which was outstanding as was the selection of breads and desserts.
This is one of the coolest bars in London and whilst pricy, the staff are very friendly and accomodating and it lives up to its excellent reputation.
Cons: It can be considered expensive for drinks and it can get very full and be difficult to find a table during busy periods, at these times the place can feel overcrowded and bar service can be elongated.
Pros: Baltic is a stylish Polish restaurant just off The Cut near Southwark tube. It has taken the recent trend of vodka bars and extended into a whole restaurant loosely based on Polish food but with an uber-trendy bar and restaurant area. First impressions are generally good, the huge double doors give an imposing impression as you walk though. This is a good Winter restaurant, with a cosy bar area and lots of twinkling lights to aaah at.
We started at the bar and had a few cocktails and beers. We tried the Zywiec Polish beer, a reasonable enough lager. I also tried a Polish Martini, made with Zubrowka (Bison grass) vodka. A Martini it was not but it was a tasty moderately strong vodka based cocktail with a hint of honey and spiced liquor.
On to the food, we had some very nice warm bread and butter to nibble on while waiting for our final guests. We also had some red and white wine which was fine, I didn't choose it so I can't comment on the wine list in general. We were dining from a set menu as a big group so I started with goose rilettes which were great, served with a nice pickle and some toasted bread. Onto mains, I had the 70s staple chicken Kiev. This was made with a proper cut of chicken though, still on the bone. It was nicely garlicky without being overly strong. Dessert was a baked cheesecake which had an odd texture, I suspect it had been recently defrosted.
We opted for some shots throughout the meal which were extortionately priced, the cherry was nice enough if clearly not very strong but the potato vodka was awful.
Cons: The food was moderately priced for a group Xmas meal, but combined with drinks I think pushed the limit a bit given the menu and quality of the food.
The staff were fairly miserable, particularly the manager who told us off for waiting too long for our companions. Perhaps some etiquette training wouldn't go amiss.
The vodka was way overpriced for shots, clearly a money-spinner for them though.
