    Great service...

    Nov 9, 2009

    I have taken bikes to Baz ranging from a non-running 79/T CB400n, through a 02/02 Diversion 900 to recently a damaged/repairable BMW R850R.

He has always completed a high standard of work, with fantastic communication about what is being spent in terms of parts & labour.

    Go see him!

    A proper job !

    Sep 2, 2010

I've been using Lightning Services for ages, and have big love for Baz and Kev. I have always found them fair and amenable. Expect an old school type service and a cuppa should you turn up when the kettle boils !
I use Baz for general maintenance and also for custom work and have never had cause to complain. I've also seen Baz work past the expected hours at times without charge if a job needs doing. Small workshops like this are a dying breed, I hope Lightning Services are around for a long time to come ...

    Misquoted

    Aug 12, 2010

This was a very unfortunate situation because, like many who have commented here, I found Baz to be very approachable and straight forward but I was misquoted on the price. It was to remove and fit wheel bearings to both of my wheels that were to be powder coated. We had a talk about the job and Baz told me it would be £50. However, when it came to paying for the job and I asked for confirmation that the price was £50 plus Vat Baz said that was per wheel. Now, clearly I was not happy to be told the price was double what I expected to pay but Baz was adamant he had not misquoted me and that he had said it was £50 per wheel. I found that Baz was extremely reluctant to understand what I was saying, which I suppose is understandable given that from his point of view I was asking to half the price. But he would not even try to appreciate my position in that the job had now doubled in price. He simply said that he does not misquote, that his prices for this service are fixed and on his website. That is all fine but not relevant to the simple issue that I was given a price verbally without seeing or being directed to the prices on his website. He also said that I had messed him around when asking for the bearing sizes so I could supply them myself. This was a change from what he had said previously because I had thanked Baz when he gave me this information and apologised for the hassle it might have caused and Baz told me it was ‘not a problem’. To then hear Baz contradict himself by saying that I had messed him about and that it was a problem as he likes customers to order parts through him was confusing and contradictory. I suggested that we should have written the price down to avoid any confusion and he said that was not necessary as his prices are fixed, again that does not help me because all I remember is being told it was £50 and did not see and was not shown any fixed prices. I am not saying they are not there, just that I made the decision to ask Baz to carry out the work based on our conversation and nothing else. He also said that if he had written it down I would have accused him of writing it after I left the workshop, this again is uncomfortable to hear. At no point did I accuse Baz of deliberately misleading me. This was a very unfortunate situation and very regrettable made all the worse by the defensive and very unhelpful attitude shown by Baz when there was a problem. After meeting him I did not expect that he would be so callous.

I am sure that Baz is genuine in his belief that he did not misquote me but I am just as genuine in my belief that he did.

    • Lightning Services offers wheel bearing/seal replacement services based on the type of wheel and bearing.
Harley Davidson Taper type bearing - £20.00+VAT/wheel
Harley Davidson post 2000 sealed bearing - £50.00+VAT/wheel
Other sealed wheel bearing - £40.00+VAT/wheel.
All these prices are exclusive of parts, and are fixed whether the bearing is removed using normal extraction tools, or whether further work is involved such as the application of heat, freezing or welding to enable the extraction of seized or damaged races. We were recomended to Stuart by another business owner who was present when I quoted £40.00 plus VAT per wheel - our standard charge.

At the time Stuart wanted to pay £40.00+VAT for the job rather than per wheel (diarised). However, when Stuart collected his wheels and settled his invoice in late June we amicably discussed his restoration project for a while. We then parted company with a handshake and assurances of no hard feelings on either side over Stuart's misunderstanding regarding the price.Clearly this is not true on Stuart's part.

I note also that there is no mention that when Stuart asked how much to remove and refit the sprocket carrier bearing as an add-on to the original job, I said it would be carried out for free. Which it was.

      An unfortunate encounter, indeed.

    • I am afraid that I must take issue with your comments Baz. You quoted me £50 plus vat for the job but when it came to taking payment you told me that was per wheel. You did eventually charge me £40 plus vat per wheel but that was certainly not the price quoted as you now say. The problem is that you did not charge me the price you quoted. That you removed and refitted the sprocket carrier bearing without further charges, grateful though I am, does not really lessen the blow.
I had no choice other than to pay you what you wanted as you would not release my property to me under any other circumstances, you made that perfectly clear. We did not discuss my restoration project and as for your comment about 'assurances of no hard feelings on either side', I gave you no such assurances whatsoever. I also object to you saying that I acknowledged it was my 'misunderstanding regarding the price'. I can assure you that I pay close attention when someone gives me a price and find it far more likely that you, as someone who quotes on a frequent basis, would not recall the detail of every occasion.
I have been honest and factual and, therefore I feel, given a fair account of what happened. I find your comments Baz to be untruthful and underhanded and have eroded any remaining benefit of the doubt you might have been owed. I feel badly let down by you and your company and your response has only added to that disappointment. I am very sorry to say that reading your response merely proves to me just how unreliable and untrustworthy you can be.

    • I will not get in to a tit-for-tat exchange. I am sure that the fact that so much of our new business in the workshop comes by way of personal recomendation from our satisfied customers along with the overwhelmingly positive reviews we receive from our customers will outweigh this one unfortunate encounter. I'll trust the the opinion of the rest of our customers.

Earlier lasy year I contacted Baz at Lightning Services when I was experiencing fuelling issues on my Sporty, why? well my local dealer seemed to be totally uninterested and unable or unwilling to offer advice, as they hadnt fitted the stage 1 kit, even though they had sold me the machine with the kit fitted.
Being in Scotland there isnt a large choice of dealers to choose from, and not liking either attitude or high dealer costs, I spotted Baz on the net whilst searching for Harley information.
Over one telephone call, he had sussed out the potential issue, suggested new parts, supplied them next day with the advice on fitting and setting up.
    Truly great service!!
All was well until the bike began to misfire badly on a recent trip out, so called Baz on return home, again over one call he had identified the potential issue, again he was correct.
This threw up another issue on re starting after the fix, another call to Baz, who identified the issue, which was me incorrectly re assembling the carb!!
So all back together running as sweet as a nut!!

All thanks to Baz at Lightning Services, who gave of his time and advice, courtiously, accurately, and in a way that many should learn from, Main Dealers Take Note. And all this was free!!!!!!!!

I would and will heartilly recoment Lightning Services without hesitation, and will be my first stop for all my Harley requirements in the future, you should do the same>

    Mike,

    • Thanks, Mike. I'm almost blushing here.

Advice is free, although as a reciprical gesture of good will we appreciate it if you buy your parts from Lightning. Just like Mike does. Without the parts and workshop business our expertise and knowlege base will not be available to offer advice.

Mike's bike apparently now runs sweeter than ever once I'd identified the problem and he reassembled the carb and set it up by following our CV Carb set up precedure. Job done, One Sweet Sporty and another Happy Customer.

    • Colin's Shovel has been in the workshop for a complete motor overhaul/rebuild this year. Crank was rebuilt and balanced, new Cylinders and Cast Pistons - honed to final size in torqueplates, repairs to the Delkron cases with a +30thou" oversize Jims breather valve installed, electrical repairs and the S&S carb was overhauled with new accelerator pump ejector and float bowl assembly. We also cured the gearbox mainshaft oil leak.

This is a sweet motor and is now a one kick Harley Shovelhead.

    Better than main dealers

    Jul 17, 2009

Baz & Kevin have been looking after my various bikes for a number of years now. Buell, Gilera, Ducati ... there's nothing of mine that Lightning Services couldn't handle. They have done my servicing, repairs, MOT's, supplied trick bits, paintwork, tyres and I cannot fault any of it. Prices are well below main dealer rates too.

    • Gary's an established customer - we have also looked after his Twin Cam Harley Dyna and hope to see him put some miles on his latest ride - a Harley TC Night Train.
